Actually, I guess it’s not really Harry Potter - it’s the Hogwarts Houses. People talk about JK Rowling’s flaws with the Hogwarts houses because they’re seperated into four unreasonably stereotypical categories:
Gryffindor - the good guys who always save the day, the heroes, the ones everyone wants to be, the perfect group.
Ravenclaw - the unbelievably nerdy guys, usually stuck up, etc.
Hufflepuff - the guys that just aren’t good enough for the other houses.
Slytherin - the bad guys. End of story.
All of you who tend to go with these conclusions, well… You’re wrong. That’s just an extremely shallow point of view when it comes to in depth process of these houses. There’s a lot more than just what people get from watching the movies. Here, I’ll help guide you in the right direction.
We’ll start with Gryffindor. Gryffindors are the brave individuals. They’re the ones who won’t just give in, but fight. They’re not afraid to stand up against unreasonable odds. However, that doesn’t mean that they’re heroes or even perfect individuals. Take Percy Weasley for example. He abandoned his family and sided with people who were for basically destroying his family. He had his moment of weakness, but, don’t worry, in the end he did go back to his family. What about Albus Dumbledore? He did everything he could to reach the top, was power hungry, and possibly even killed his sister. Even when he fought against his greed, a part of him still ached for it. Then there’s Peter Pettigrew, who has none of the qualities of a Gryffindor, but, I avoid talking about him at all costs in regards to the house he was sorted into. Gryffindors have their flaws, just as everyone.
When it comes to Ravenclaws, yeah, they’re smart. They strive for knowledge. That doesn’t mean they’re stuck up or rude or even all that nerdy. What about our lovely Luna Lovegood? She was far from stuck up. She was brave, she was kind, and intelligent. What about Cho Chang? She was very modest, very caring, and look…she was very popular. All the guys wanted to be with sweet, shy Cho Chang. Ravenclaws aren’t rude, or believe they’re better than everyone else… At least not all of them. They just appreciate knowledge more than most things.
Now for what I consider the two most misunderstood houses: Slytherin and Hufflepuff.
Slytherins are not all bad guys. I become so frustrated when people say this. Slytherins are ambitious, that’s it. People just tend to mistake this for evil. We can always go with the very obvious example against this - Severus Snape. First off, can we take a moment and admire the facade that Snape had? He pretended to be this evil, terrible person while the entire time he was protecting Harry because of his undying love for Harry’s mother Lilly. That is outrageous. And there was his courage. Take a moment and consider the courage it takes to deceive Voldemort the way Snape did. Yeah, Snape wasn’t the most pleasant guy, but he wasn’t “bad.” Neither was Draco Malfoy. Have you all forgotten how he would not turn Harry in to Bellatrix? He wasn’t going to do it, to turn in the last hope the wizarding world had to be rid of Voldemort. That was a brave, and good thing to do. Then there’s Merlin. He was a Slytherin. Do you remember all that he did for King Arthur? Yeah. Don’t try to tell me Merlin’s a bad guy.
When it comes to Hufflepuffs. Sigh. People seem to be mistaking the priority of kindness as “not good enough for every other house.” Hufflepuffs aren’t cowards, or stupid, or pathetic. Hufflepuffs simply focus on the lack of conflict, on being kind. That doesn’t mean they won’t stand up for what they believe in, or that they’re stupid, or that they aren’t good enough. We’ll start with Cedric Diggory. He wasn’t stupid for he had quite good marks in his Hogwarts career. He wasn’t a coward, either. He was more than willing to stand by Harry’s side when facing Voldemort, he was simply killed beforehand. Can I bring up how he was going to let Harry win the tournament because Harry saved his life? Quite a quality, that is. He was a kind, caring individual. When his father tried to boast of Cedric beating Harry in Quidditch, Cedric tried to make him stop because it wasn’t fair that he won. He tried to keep his friends from wearing the badges. He helped Harry figure out the second task. He has really rather considerate for other people’s emotions. Then there’s Professor Sprout. She was definitely an intelligent individual. I can’t exactly recall the example I had in mind, but, if you’ve read the books, I’m certain you can think of some. Then there’s Nymphadora Tonks. She was a character. I’m using her for mainly the example of courage and standing up for what she believed in. Tonks loved Lupin, despite him being a werewolf. There was the possibility that he would kill her, but that didn’t stop her. She wanted to be with him, there for him, through everything, no matter what. In the end, she gave up her life fighting by his side and for the people she loved. Her courage was astounding.
Just because JK Rowling only went into depth with Gryffindor doesn’t mean there isn’t more to the rest of the houses than what meets the eyes. People should take that into consideration before passing their judgement.
Aw, Ste! I rarely see anyone talk so positively about their job, I’m so sorry it’s gone, was it an interview or an actual job you got at Carphone Warehouse (or did I dream this?) for when you come back?
I actually got the job a Carphone Warehouse. I turned it down though as I’m meant to be going to Xi’an, China to teach in a few weeks. I’ve been told to ring them when I’m back though, which is always positive.
24) My Relationship With My Parents Good, on the whole anyway. We have a few confrontations every now and then, but to be honest I’d be worried if we didn’t as I think I’m too different from the rest of my family.
29) A Confession
I used to tell people in High School that Daniel Radcliffe was my cousin. So ashamed now though, I only said it to make myself sound cooler. *blushing*
37) 3 Habits I Have
I like to doodle, so much so that I’ll do it on anything that’s with in reach of my pencil.
Forgetting to text back is one of my biggest bad habits, I do it on a near daily basis. I’ll read a text from a friend, and then something else would grab my attention and I’d just forget that I was in the middle of messaging someone back.
I tend to bit my thumb nail a lot too if I become anxious, it drives me insane.
13) Something I Really, Really Want My Hogwarts letter dammit! But I guess it’s 13 years too late now, so I’d settle for someone to cuddle with at night. That’d be nice.
14) My Current Relationship Status Unfortunately I’m single…
27) Someone On Tumblr I’d Date Urm, I don’t know to be completely honest. I don’t really know anyone from Tumblr, except for a few of my amazing friends. Don’t get me wrong, there’s a few hotties lurking around Tumblr that I’ve seen, but I don’t know them thus this makes them more or less inaccessible for dating pruposes.
(Not even sure if that made any sense?)
38) My Future Goals
Find someone special and settle down I suppose, other than that I’d quite like to get in shape a little more and also find a kick arse job :) … or win the lottery.
39) Something I fantasise About Hahahaha well other than being filthy rich, there’s a few things but I think they’re a little graphical to voice on my main tumblr account, if you find out my other account - I’m sure theres a few things on there ;)
48) Number Of Kids I Want I’d happily settle for one or two if I found the right person :)
